Oh sweetie, it's not the end of the world. There have been doom-and-gloom prophesiers since the first group of homo sapiens had a bad day. We didn't live through the whole Cold War, but I'm pretty sure people were predicting nuclear annihilation on a daily basis. And even if this turns out to be the Great Depression, which would be crappy, none of us will start having to trap squirrels in the garden to feed our families. We just may have to cancel the satellite dish and not take trips to California or Mexico or wherever. As far as I can tell, things are never quite as bad, or quite as fabulous, as people predict. (Since it's 2009, shouldn't I have my own antimatter travel system that precludes me standing in the security line at Las Vegas airport for upwards of 45 minutes at a time?) Just remember that all these naysayers get paid more the more people they can get to pay attention to them. Even NPR. And nobody ever ran to the TV to catch a newscast that said, "Things are fine - we're just looking at some mediocre growth for an undetermined amount of time." Predictions of chaos are way more interesting.

What she said.

And you know what? As long as we all stick together and support each other in any way we can, we will get through the worst of it and maybe even be better for having been through it.

Now excuse me while I go barf.

I'm sorry you had to hear gloom and doom. Unfortunately your travel companion has never had the opportunity to reassure a child so it is hard for her to understand your own feelings and the feelings for your own child. As it was stated before, we are so much better off than any of the generations before and at worse we won't be able to go on summer vacays to Disneyland. PS.. I'm sure your mom has a food supply :) That is my answer to myself when the really bad thoughts creep up.

Recessions are like a really bad fever ok? Recessions are how they economy says that it's sick and needs some attention. It's also how the economy gets rid of infections like sub prime lending and other horribles. Yes it hurts. Yes the economy would rather be out playing with its friends instead of laying in bed watching macgeyver reruns. Yes the economy will probably still feel crummy a week or two after it gets back on its feet. But it will get back on its feet. It may not be quite as happy and virile as it once was but it will get better and it will open doors for innovation and creation and some really great things. This is not the apocolypse. There will be no hellfire and brimstone. Jobs will be lost and businesses will close and people will hurt but we will get better. It's what humans are good at. We adjust. We will adjust.

I agree completely. The media creates fear and negativity. Good news and status quo isn't news to them so they make everything seem awful. Take it with a grain of salt.

Loved this post about religion. I have often thought we might attend services of some sort of services when the kids get older. For a sense of community and whatnot. But it's hard to find any church that matches your views EXACTLY. I would be honest with pastor about what you want amd what will scare you away.
